Heat pump iced over in winter

Light frost on a heat pump in winter is normal. The unit melts it off every so often, sometimes with a whoosh and a little steam. Answer these to tell us what you're seeing.

Don't want to answer questions? That's fine. Skip them and go straight to scheduling.

1How much ice is on the outdoor unit?

Tip: Light frost that comes and goes is normal. Don't chip at the ice; the coil damages easily.

2Is the house staying warm?

Tip: If your thermostat has an Emergency Heat setting, switch to it until we arrive. It costs more to run, so only use it until the repair.

3Is the air filter dirty?

Tip: If it's gray and you can't see light through it, replace it. A clogged filter causes more problems than anything else. See Air filters: how often and why.

4What size is your air filter?

Tip: The size is printed on the edge of the filter. With it, our technician can bring the right filter.
