Homeowner First Response

Furnace blowing cold air or not heating

Answer these quick questions. Some fix the problem on the spot, and the rest tell our technician what to look for before they arrive.

Smell rotten eggs? That can be a gas leak. Leave the house now and don't flip any switches. From outside, call 911 and your gas company. In Lexington that's usually Columbia Gas of Kentucky: 1-800-432-9515 (24/7).

Don't want to answer questions? That's fine. Skip them and go straight to scheduling.

1Does the thermostat screen light up?

Tip: Look for a low-battery symbol on the screen. If you see one, change the batteries.

2Is the thermostat fan set to Auto?

Tip: On runs the blower all the time, so you'll feel cool air between heating cycles. Auto fixes that.

3Is the air filter dirty?

Tip: If it's gray and you can't see light through it, replace it. A clogged filter causes more problems than anything else. See Air filters: how often and why.

4What size is your air filter?

Tip: The size is printed on the edge of the filter. With it, our technician can bring the right filter.

5Is air coming out of the vents?
6How strong does the air feel at the vents when the fan is on?

Tip: Set the thermostat fan to On and hold your hand a few inches from a vent. Check a couple of rooms, then set the fan back to Auto.
