AC running but not cooling

Answer these quick questions. Some fix the problem on the spot, and the rest tell our technician what to look for before they arrive.

1Is the air filter dirty?

Tip: If it's gray and you can't see light through it, replace it. A clogged filter causes more problems than anything else. See Air filters: how often and why.

2What size is your air filter?

Tip: The size is printed on the edge of the filter. With it, our technician can bring the right filter.

3How strong does the air feel at the vents when the fan is on?

Tip: Set the thermostat fan to On and hold your hand a few inches from a vent. Check a couple of rooms, then set the fan back to Auto.

4Is the fan on top of the outdoor unit spinning?

Tip: If the fan isn't spinning but the unit is humming, set the thermostat to Off until we arrive. Running it that way can damage the compressor.

5Do you see ice on the copper lines or the indoor unit?

Tip: If there's ice, set the thermostat mode to Off and the fan to On. The blower will thaw it before we get there.

6Is there water in the drain pan or around the float switch?

Tip: The drain pan sits under the indoor unit. When it fills, the float switch shuts the system off on purpose to prevent a leak. If it's full, turn the system off and tell us.
